The Story Behind Cheesman Park

Cheesman Park has one of the most unique histories in Denver.

Before it became a park, the land was known as Mount Prospect Cemetery, established in 1858 as Denver’s first official burial ground. As the city expanded, the cemetery became neglected and surrounded by residential development.

In 1890, plans were approved to convert the cemetery into a public park. Families were given a short window to relocate loved ones, but many graves were never claimed. A contractor was hired to handle the removal process, which quickly became controversial due to poor handling of remains and reports of corner cutting.

The project was eventually halted, and it is widely believed that thousands of remains were never relocated. Despite that complicated past, the land was transformed into a park and officially opened in the early 1900s. It was later named after Walter Cheesman, an early Denver entrepreneur and civic leader.

Today, that history adds a layer of character and local lore that makes Cheesman Park unlike any other neighborhood in the city.
