Spring Home Maintenance Checklist

Get Your Home Ready for the Season
April 29, 2025

As the days get longer and the weather starts to warm up, spring is the perfect time to give your home a little extra attention. A seasonal maintenance check can help prevent costly repairs, extend the life of your home's systems, and keep things running smoothly all year long.

Here are some key spring maintenance tips to help you protect your investment and enjoy a worry-free season:

Inspect Your Home’s Exterior

Walk around your home and take a close look at the foundation, siding, walls, windows, and doors. Look for any cracks, signs of water damage, or shifting that may have happened over the winter. Don’t forget to check your basement or crawl space for any moisture or leaks.

Check Smoke Alarms & Safety Systems

Replace the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. It’s also a good time to make sure everyone in your home knows where the gas and water shut-off valves are located in case of an emergency.

Clean Gutters & Downspouts

Clear out leaves, sticks, and other debris from your gutters and downspouts. Clogged gutters can lead to water overflow and cause damage to your roof, siding, and foundation.

Inspect the Roof

Your roof is your home’s first line of defense against the elements. Check for missing or damaged shingles, signs of leaks, and debris buildup. Consider hiring a professional if you’re unsure or need repairs.

Refresh Your Plumbing & Appliances

  • Check your washing machine hoses for bulges, cracks, or leaks.

  • Clean the exhaust vent to prevent lint buildup and reduce fire risk.

  • Clean your garbage disposal by running ice cubes and cold water through it.

  • Clean your refrigerator coils (usually behind or under the unit) to keep it running efficiently.

  • Replace or clean the exhaust vent filter above your oven to keep your kitchen air fresh.

Prep Your Cooling System

Schedule a professional HVAC tune-up at least a month before you start using your air conditioning. It’s always better to catch any issues early than deal with unexpected breakdowns in the middle of a heat wave.

Get Your Lawn & Sprinklers Ready

Check your automatic sprinkler system to ensure it’s working correctly and not leaking. It’s also a good time to fertilize your lawn, trim back shrubs, and freshen up garden beds.

Bonus Tip: Review Your Home Insurance

Spring is a great time to review your home insurance coverage. If you’ve made any upgrades or find damage that needs repairs, make sure your policy is still giving you the protection you need.

Taking a little time this spring to do some preventive maintenance can save you from headaches (and big expenses) later. Enjoy the season ahead—and don’t forget to take time to relax and enjoy your refreshed space.
