Denver is making history with the announcement of a purpose-built stadium and entertainment district for its new NWSL women’s soccer team. The 14,500-seat stadium, set to be built at Santa Fe Yards (Broadway and I-25), will be the first sports and entertainment district in Colorado designed specifically for professional women’s sports. Slated to open in spring 2028, this development marks a major milestone for women’s soccer and the Denver community.
The new stadium represents the largest private investment in a women’s professional sports team to date. According to Rob Cohen, Denver NWSL’s controlling owner, this project is about more than just soccer—it’s about revitalizing Santa Fe Yards into a vibrant hub for recreation, community engagement, and economic growth.
“This project will reconnect neighborhoods, create new jobs, and boost the local economy during and after the construction process,” said Cohen. “Most importantly, it will provide our club, fans, and community with a state-of-the-art stadium that serves as the most inclusive environment in all of Colorado.”
The 14-acre redevelopment will feature:
A 14,500-seat stadium, with the potential for future expansion.
A 3.5-acre recreational park integrated with the stadium complex.
Pedestrian and bike-friendly pathways connecting to public transit.
Future mixed-use development, including retail and dining spaces.
This innovative design, developed in partnership with global design firm Populous, will create a seamless blend of professional athletics and community recreation. With a focus on accessibility and inclusivity, the new stadium will reshape how women’s sports are integrated into the city’s cultural and economic fabric.
The Santa Fe Yards site has remained largely unused for decades, but this project will transform it into a thriving sports and entertainment district. Mayor Mike Johnston praised the initiative, stating, “This project at Santa Fe Yards will turn an underutilized eyesore into a recreational and economic hub where memories are made, culture is built, and championships are won.”
The significance of this stadium extends beyond Denver—it sets a new standard for professional women’s sports. NWSL Commissioner Jessica Berman emphasized the importance of this investment, calling it a “bold statement about where women’s sports are headed.”
“Denver is helping to shape the future of women’s soccer,” said Berman. “This world-class venue will have a lasting impact on players, fans, and the broader community.”
Denver NWSL will soon unveil plans for a temporary stadium and purpose-built performance center while construction is underway. CAA ICON, known for its expertise in sports venue project management, will oversee the stadium’s development alongside Populous.
With its strategic location, cutting-edge design, and commitment to advancing women’s sports, the Santa Fe Yards stadium will become a landmark for Denver and a beacon for the future of women’s soccer. Stay tuned for more updates as this historic project takes shape!
